Admission requirements
– a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree
– in exceptional cases admission to the study program may also be granted if applicants have acquired the necessary admission requirements for the program in the form of substantial professional practice
– proof of particular artistic ability in the field of performance
The entrance exam is divided into two parts:
Part 1: Written application
Create an applicant account in the HMDK e-portal, download the application form, print it out, sign it and send it by post to the Examination Office within 1 week of the application deadline (postmark applies). Send it together with the following documents:
– a curriculum vitae in tabular form with details of address, e-mail, date of birth, school-leaving certificate, any previous periods of study and degrees, professional experience and other qualifications, involvement in projects, prizes, awards or scholarships
– copy of school leaving certificate (usually A-levels or similar)
– copy of university degrees (BA or similar)
– if applicable, evidence of professional practice that is equivalent to an undergraduate study programme
– proof of academic achievements from previous studies
– applicants who have previously studied at another university must enclose proof of study periods and examinations already taken
– proof of payment of a processing fee of €50 per application

Important note:
If the processing fee of €50 has not been transferred to our account on time, the application for the given semester can no longer be considered.
The processing fee will only be refunded if the entrance examination is cancelled by the university (not if applicants cancel on their own initiative).
The fee cannot be transferred to the next application phase.
Please do not enclose an extra passport photo with your application documents. We also ask you not to use any extra application folders.
Please sign the application and return it to the HMDK Stuttgart within 1 week after the application deadline (postmark is valid). The address is already noted on the application.
If your certificates are not issued in German, they have to be submitted as a certified German or English translation. Applications for admission that are incomplete or not submitted on time may be rejected. In these cases, applicants are not entitled to participate in the admission exam.

Please send the documents as individual pdf.-files and name them according to this scheme: last name_first name_letter of motivation.pdf
– a digital copy of the CV in tabular form, that you sent by post
– a letter of motivation (no more than 2000 characters) in which you answer the following questions
a) How does my own artistic work relate to contemporary performance?
b) What are your reasons for applying to the MA programme at this time?
c) What do I want to learn in a two-year MA programme? What are my personal goals?
– a portfolio of a maximum of 3 performative works with a short summary and links to documentation/text/audio/video of these artistic/theoretical works. Please choose works that have been significant for your own academic and artistic development.
- – a written and an artistic response to the text, which you can download here.
– Formulate a written response in German or English of max. 2 pages (DIN A4). You can use the following questions as orientation for your text: Is there anything that particularly interests you about the ideas in the text? What can you build on, is there theoretical content, related aspects or your own ideas that you directly associate with it? What further questions arise for you from the text?
-Develop an artistic response to the text that you can make available digitally (e.g. video link, audio link, text, image material or other) The admissions committee should be able to review this response in a maximum of 15 minutes. Please add a short text to your response in which you explain, how you responded artistically to the text.
Part 2: Two-day entrance exam in presence
After your submitted application has been reviewed, you will be notified whether you are admitted to the second round of the entrance exam in presence. The entrance exam will take place on 2 & 3 June, 2025 in Stuttgart. You will receive further information about the entrance exam with the invitation.
